Our Mission
To reimagine affordable housing through the lens of community resilience. We believe a trauma- informed (or community resilience) approach to property management, resident services and physical design can yield better outcomes for residents, staff and owners.
The Project
A multi-disciplinary team of practitioners, including residents and staff of POAH communities, will use human centered design to understand how we might change property management, resident services and physical design to be more trauma-informed and support community resilience.
The intended result is a more effective and equitable model for affordable housing that increases staff well-being and retention and improves resident experience, all while improving property performance.

About the Housing Affordability Breakthrough Challenge
POAH’s Designing Trauma Resilient Communities project is supported by the Housing Affordability Breakthrough Challenge.
The Housing Affordability Breakthrough Challenge is a three-year $20 million initiative with the goal to identify and scale six leading-edge innovations. Enterprise Community Partners administers the Breakthrough Challenge with generous support from Wells Fargo. It is a key component of Wells Fargo's $1 billion commitment in support of housing affordability solutions by 2025.
A call for applications drew 885 proposals from organizations in 49 states, Washington, D.C., and Puerto Rico. Enterprise and Wells Fargo announced the six winners in September 2020, including POAH’s Designing Trauma Resilient Communities. Together, these six innovations promise to promote racial equity and create a more sustainable and equitable housing system.
